Chapter 10

The sun had broken out from behind the gray clouds and brightness turned the day golden yellow, but a chill still hung in the air.

“Are you sure Jacob doesn’t want to go ice-skating?” Tobias asked when she quickly let go of his hand. Jacob turned around to wave at them.

“He’s trying to impress you with his scooter skills,” Savannah replied. He looked toward the boy and gave him a thumbs up.

A ball hurtled towards them from the left, where a group of teenagers played football. Tobias ran over and threw it back to them. The park was teeming with families on this most normal of Sunday afternoons and he felt as if they fit right in; as if this was the most natural thing in the world—visiting a park over the weekend. Savannah looked around quickly, as if she’d seen something.

“What is it?” he asked.

“What if someone saw us?” She pushed her hands into the pockets of her coat. She’d worn long boots as well, needing to keep warm in the flimsy fabric that he had loved taking off her. “Relax,” he chuckled. “There are no press people here.”

“You don’t need reporters or the press. One normal person who recognized you and uploaded your photo to social media would be enough to cause damage.”

“You sound paranoid,” he exclaimed. “Why would anyone do that?”

“Because you’re the number one most eligible bachelor in New York.” He snorted at that, dismissing it quickly with a nod of his head. “That’s a stupid list that only stupid people follow.”

“There are plenty of stupid people around.” She looked around warily. “Where are your security men? I don’t see them.” She craned her neck, doing a full 360 degree circle as she scanned around the perimeters of the park. “You’re not supposed to see them.” Tobias answered.

“Then how do you know they’re here?”

“They are. Trust me on that. They’re here. I don’t want security men who look like big, bulky bodyguards. I’m a businessman and a hedge fund owner at that, not a rock or film star. I consider myself boring in comparison. I don’t have an entourage. Just one or two guys who follow me when I’m out.”

“What’s the threat?”

He shrugged. “People who want money. People who know what I’m worth and might want to try something silly.”

“Doesn’t that scare you?”

“I try not to think about it. Maybe if…” Maybe if Ivy had been alive he’d have been scared for her.

“Maybe if what?”

He paused for the longest time as they continued to walk. Savannah kept looking over to where Jacob was every few seconds, ever watchful, ever alert. After a few seconds had passed, he spoke. “I was worried when I was with Ivy that someone might try to hurt her. It wasn’t a case of getting protection for myself. I was worried about her.” He concentrated on a small patch of thick, green grass, feeling the urge to retreat into himself again.

“Who would hurt her?”

“Sick people have a way of using the ones you love to get back at you.
